Great job in defusing hostage drama

Published:Wednesday | September 11, 2019 | 12:10 AM

THE EDITOR, Sir:

The Jamaica Constabulary Force’s swift and successful apprehension of two suspected gunmen who attempted to rob patrons and an operator of a Cash Pot outlet at the intersection of Molynes Road and Seaward Drive is a source of optimism.

People need to feel that when they call on the police, dangerous situations will be handled professionally.

First, the non-lethal defusing of the hostage bid is proof that high-risk situations can be dealt with safely.

Second, it shows that criminals can be brought before the courts to face their justice instead of becoming the subject of a coroner’s inquest.

Finally, organisations such as the Independent Commission of Investigations can be satisfied that our police are executing their duties lawfully.

Should the Jamaica Constabulary Force maintain this type of response, the possibility exists that more criminals will be taken off the streets.

I stress the notion that intelligence should be the driving force behind the apprehension of criminals.

Our men and women in the Jamaica Constabulary Force, as well as the Jamaica Defence Force, should be commended for their professionalism in Monday’s stand-off. Too often their efforts in maintaining law and order go unnoticed.
