Memories of Machado era come flooding back

THE EDITOR, Sir:

I want to thank Anthony Gambrill for his article of great historical record titled ‘How Cubans created a Jamaican tobacco industry’ (Sunday, September 8, 2019). It was very enlightening in many ways.

My family is from Jamaica. We knew the Machados as well as other folk who had tobacco-growing farms.

But the article was of greater interest to me because I worked in the advertising department of J&B Machado in the mid- to late- 1960s and was slated to succeed the advertising manager (I was the only Jamaican in senior management because it was owned by the British American Tobacco Company and all the senior executives were sent from abroad), but I decided to relocate to California.

I have seen your articles from time to time over the past years and have enjoyed them all. Thank you.
