Articulated buses in terrible condition

Published:Wednesday | September 18, 2019 | 12:28 AM

THE EDITOR, Sir:

Commuters daily pay for a service on Jamaica Urban Transit Company (JUTC) buses that is despicable. The buses are filled with mould, dust, and dirt. To make matters worse, some are leaking profusely when it rains. People have had to be using umbrellas inside the buses.

On Tuesday, June 18, 2019, I took an articulated JUTC bus on the Portmore to downtown Kingston route. The section that joins the two carriages of the bus was tearing apart. The entire top was ripped open.

I am certain that no passenger was aware of the condition of the bus until after they had entered and paid their fare. Why put a bus on a route that may endanger lives? Time and time again, our rights are being violated by a system that is supposed to be protective of the people. Should we just sit down and sup everything that is dished out to us? No!

Children and adults travel daily in buses that are deteriorating and that are polluted with toxins that can cause serious health issues and loss of life. How long will the JUTC management sit and fold their hands before doing something to redress these breaches?
