Not all carbs are the same

THE EDITOR, Madam:

Great article from Patria-Kaye Aarons, ‘Dumpling causes diabetes’, published in The Gleaner on Wednesday, December 4, 2019. However, I want to point out a few things.

Not all carbs are the same. Carbs in green bananas are complex, resistant starch that act like fiber and facilitate digestion. Green bananas are great food for diabetics, and everyone, too, because of the low glycemic index (sugar) and high fiber content. Green bananas contain antioxidants and lots of minerals, including potassium.

Dumplings are OK once per month. It is also easier to cook a banana than make a dumpling and then cook it. Also, Type 1 Diabetes has been classified as an autoimmune disease.

My suggestion, Ms Aarons, if you should write another article on Jamaican diet and carbs, is to mention that Type 1 Diabetes is classified as an autoimmune disease; Type 2 Diabetes is still being studied to see if it, too, is an autoimmune condition.
