Bad roads, water woes still a problem

Published:Thursday | December 12, 2019 | 12:25 AM

THE EDITOR, Madam:

The nightly chants on radio and television for roads, water and electricity have abated to some extent, but the problems have remained the same or are exacerbated in most areas. St Mary, especially the western section, is one parish where the roads continue to deteriorate with every shower of rain. To compound this problem, some of the roads slip, sink, or slide in some parts, making repairs or rehabilitation extremely difficult.

As a result of these terrible road conditions, most of the western section of the parish is virtually cut off or isolated from other areas in the island. So, here we find ourselves in a precarious position – mourning the lack of water as the October rains stayed away and rejoicing that said rains did not come to obliterate what is left of the roads. The urgency of the response needed to fix the problems may necessitate declaring the western section of St Mary a disaster area and hasten the repair of these roads. Failure to act on this emergency may result in the unnecessary loss of life as medical facilities are not easily accessible. The Government and the relevant agencies need to act now or say something on this very pressing matter.
