Water woes and sensibility

THE EDITOR, Madam:

When does a bill become nonsensical? The National Water Commission (NWC) has been taking steps to improve delivery in Kingston and St Andrew, yet water continues to be either a drip, a tiny flow, or nothing. Because no one is at home, we no longer complain. We no longer complain because it is useless. If I complain, NWC continues to use the same line: ‘Maybe you have a leak’. What does a leak have to do with no water in the pipes? For more than 30 years, it’s the same story. Living with this situation has become the norm. We paid the bill because it was either service charges only or a small amount, and we move on. Water trucks come visiting, selling water, and we continue to get a monthly bill.

I keep the main on to the premises locked off because of this, and no water should be used. All access points outside the house are dismantled (bung). I pay the maintenance the NWC charges to keep the service connected. Arguing with the utility company is a waste of time.

Last month, I went on line to check my bill. The bill showed over $50,000.00. I called the NWC and was told to go to the office and make payment arrangements. Because this is impossible, I wrote to the NWC, telling them to lock off the service.

This month, I received a bill with an addition of over $1,500.00.

What is the solution to this problem? All I need is a solution that does not include paying $53,000.
