Black is a blessing

THE EDITOR, Madam:

Being black is a blessing which needs to be celebrated by all black people. True ‘blackness’ is more than a pigmentation; it delineates our strength, vision, resilience, courageousness, bravery, creativity and innovation.

For many, when they hear of‘Black History Month they are innately reminded of slavery. While slavery is part of our history, it is not our only history. Our history began before civilisation occurred. Our ancestors have been constantly fighting for their freedom and independence; they also made many discoveries which are now assets to many societies.

As blacks, we tend to shun the roots of our history; and some may not even appreciate it. I would like to remind our people that being black is not a badge of shame, but an honour; it is a rare blessing which only a few are blessed with.

We must hold our heads high and be grateful for the determination and consistent bravery of our ancestors – it is their bravery that allows us to have the many opportunities that we have now, including the ability to vote, worldwide access to quality education, and the privilege of travelling and partnering with other countries.

Let us not forget that for this month, we are also celebrating our individual selves as true black people.

So happy Black History Month to all!
