Right on point, Dr Dawes

THE EDITOR, Madam:

Alfred Dawes’ article, ‘An open letter to the British people’, published in The Sunday Gleaner of February 16, 2020, was the first humane and well-balanced letter I have read on this controversial matter of the deportations from the United Kingdom.

As Dr Dawes says, “some had no family to come home to and were reliant on the mercy of volunteers to help them find food and lodging”.

With almost no chance of finding employment, how will they have any chance of rebuilding their lives; doubly so if mental health issues are involved.

And what of the man whose remorse is greater than his sin?

The British penal system is punitive not rehabilitative, unlike some other countries.

A thought-provoking article.
