Port Authority clarifies nature of development projects

THE EDITOR, Madam:
Reference is made to The Gleaner article, ‘JLP sabotaged Portmore”, which was published on Wednesday, February 19, 2020. The article stated that “ Phillips claimed that the former PNP administration left a contract to be signed for a technology park to be established in Naggo Head that would have been managed by the Port Authority of Jamaica”.
The Authority denies that it is involved with, or is aware of, any contract for it to manage a technology park in Naggo Head, Portmore.
The Port Authority of Jamaica (PAJ) seeks to use this opportunity to advise your readers, and the public in general, that although it has no contractual obligation for the development of a technology park in Naggo Head, it has otherwise invested extensively in the development of BPO facilities in the Portmore community.
The PAJ is currently developing an additional 200,000-square-foot, state-of-the-art global services and business process outsourcing campus. The new development, Portmore Informatics Park (PIP), is in an advanced stage of completion and is expected to be officially opened in April of this year.
The PIP will enable the PAJ to support the fulfilment of a Government of Jamaica mandate to foster economic growth and job creation, as this new development should provide employment for approximately 5,000 persons.
