Concerned about CXC exam dates

THE EDITOR, Madam:

IT WAS recently announced that Caribbean Examinations Council (CXC) exams are to be held in July, which has raised concerns among the educators who have worked hard in preparing students.

Currently, the teachers have been doing so using online platforms that seem to be effective. These preparations have been done with the already-proposed date given by CXC to begin at the end of June. Now, with this new date, things have changed.

With the distance learning being thought of as holiday by some students, a further push past the date of official school closure will render them less than ready to take these exams.

Schools officially close on July 8. It is going to be quite difficult to expect these students to be mature enough to study by themselves. This now puts a strain on the teachers.

The loss of enthusiasm is what is going to be the major problem, and the question is how will our students perform?

The lateness of the examinations also brings into question about how will these students be able to move on from the secondary to tertiary level. It is not as if there was not an alternative, but with the previously proposed date given by the council, there would be ample time for results to be given out, and adjustments and preparations made by these students.

Given the current situation, the exams should be conducted in June-end.
