Another honour for Merlene Ottey?

THE EDITOR, Madam:

I wish to state that Merlene Ottey is one of the greatest female track athletes who have ever walked this Earth, as well as representing Jamaica. I am very proud of her achievements on this, our 58th year of Independence, also being a Jamaican.

However, I may not agree with the Jamaican Government’s plan to give her another national honour – the Order of Jamaica. She has previously been conferred with the Order of Distinction. She has a school named after her, a bronze statue erected in her honour, and several Sportswoman of the Year titles. Also, she is a citizen of Slovenia.

There are so many Jamaicans, including other athletes, who have done so much, and are still doing so much, who are unrecognised. They also need to be recognised and awarded for their services to the nation.
