Letter of the Day | Use positive initiatives and youth to build Jamaica

THE EDITOR, Madam:

No matter which part of the political divide we are from, we should make the commitment to ensure that we are not a divided people. We are very proud people and none of us wants to see our ‘Rock’ be a failure no matter how frustrated we are sometimes with the system.

In retrospect, we are Jamaicans, and we want the best for all who are committed to the cause of national unity. When we travel overseas, it is amazing how we speak of Jamaica and how happy we are about the island.

If we are that patriotic abroad, why can’t we live in harmony with our fellow citizens and define who we really are in a much more compelling way? If we can get crime to a marginally low level, we would be nice.

There are a few Jamaicans who are trying to create disunity and mayhem within our midst, but we are going to weed them out from among us. One thing for certain, we will have to endeavour to ensure that the informa fi dead philosophy must be disproved and improved. We must learn to work in tandem with the security forces to trap the misguided and wayward delinquents we share this island with. Nothing can beat positive intents, but corruption can humbug critical initiatives.

If the truth be told, we will have to dispense our energies on the impressionable, gullible, suggestible, and inquisitive ones who are very young. Youngsters will be easier to mould Jamaica into a much more progressive and prosperous state. Place the most promising prospects into the six science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) schools the incumbent government has proposed to build in the near future. We should not ignore the social sciences, plus the humanities, to make way for the STEM initiatives.
