Transhumanism and COVID-19 vaccine

THE EDITOR, Madam:

For those who are unfamiliar with the term ‘transhumanism’, this is defined as ‘the belief or theory that the human race can evolve beyond its current physical and mental limitations, especially by means of science and technology’.

The concept of transhumanism is not new. It has been around from the 1950s. However, with the advent of current technologies, artificial intelligence, nanotechnology, genetic engineering, cybernetics and the like, it is no longer far-fetched to pursue the transhumanist agenda of using science and technology to move human beings beyond our current physical and mental limitations. This raises ethical, moral, spiritual, social and economic issues.

The use of modern technology to improve our lives is not all bad.

Modern technologies have assisted us in magnificent ways. The cell phone is so much a part of our lives that some of us cannot leave home without it. It’s like a new appendage. We are well aware that our privacy is being invaded but we are happy with the benefits of having the world at our fingertips, especially in these unprecedented times when we are in the throes of a pandemic.

The question that occupies the minds of many is this: will a COVID-19 vaccine be used to further the transhumanist agenda?

As a matter of fact, for many it is not a question, it is definitive. What is the truth? Who knows the answer? Will those who know be willing to give a truthful answer?

It is imperative for us to have a frank, open discussion on these matters.

Who will lead these discussions? Can I count on my colleagues in academia to get the ball rolling?
