Remove duty on computers

THE EDITOR, Madam:

The Gleaner editorial on Saturday, October 17, ‘Digital divide and struggles with schooling’, highlights very important issues. The Government can start by removing the high duties on computers, laptops, and tablets. The duty on mobile phones, which is also high, should be lowered, which will go a far way in helping students.

The current duties that are being charged are putting the poor at a disadvantage, and those parents who have either lost their jobs or are earning less can’t afford to purchase this equipment for learning.

Now that COVID-19 is upon us and the students have to take classes online, it is very important that we make this equipment affordable for everyone. It is very important to remove and reduce duties.
