People seeking solutions to their problems

THE EDITOR, Madam:

The futility of man’s rule persists, with the same futuristic zeal and policies used for centuries with the same lame results – illustrating the wisdom of Ecclesiastes 1:9, that there is nothing new under the sun. For the guarantees and visions of new beginnings, are still fulfilled with the same stunted promises year after year.

Access to healthcare, food and employment continue to be as elusive as they have ever been, with quality of life and suitable housing for poor people becoming more heart-rending – added to the non-existence of safe environments and meaningful social security.

The calibre of roads and standards of safe drinking water are easily becoming expectations of luxury – and with the tailspin occasioned by the intrusion of COVID-19, is there any doubt in the observation that self rule wasn’t meant for our undertaking? (Jeremiah 10:23.)

Yet, the puff of ambition keeps binding men’s hands and feet to the grand prize of chieftains as they jostle for power and to be the first in the kingdom of politics. Mud slinging becomes popular and useful – hitting opponents squarely in their faces while they speak of unity and national accord. Interestingly enough, even while they advertise their political credentials, injustice is leaking through several cracks as people agitate against racism and inequality. Humans have certainly led humans to great injury (Ecclesiastes 8:9). Rising crime, murders, depression and suicides are hardly separable from a systemic impotence to reverse the social decay.

The people are frustrated and yearning for change, but while the spirits are high, the minds are divided. Thus, can humans who have caused these problems provide the solutions?
