The bigger problem with CXC

Published:Monday | October 26, 2020 | 12:12 AM

THE EDITOR, Madam:

This is with reference to the editorial ‘SBA crisis demands attention’. The point is that the Caribbean Examinations Council (CXC) has been setting similar multiple-choice questions year after year, the majority of which are available online. The probability of the questions being repeated is high. The CXC has ample time to set the exams, but it seems it is taking the easy route and repeating previous years’ questions.

On the matter of the SBA, we need to remember that teachers are being asked to set and mark 20 per cent of the CXC exam, in most cases without remuneration. Added to that, all suggestions to make the system easier and more equitable seem to have been falling on deaf ears for decades. Retraining teachers will not help. The problem is systemic and must be corrected from the top.
