Early-childhood institutions in dire need of help

THE EDITOR, Madam:

I refer to the article written by Ronald Thwaites in The Gleaner of November 16, titled ‘Saving the early-childhood sector’. I am an early-childhood teacher and I can tell you that Rev Thwaites knows exactly what he is saying. My school is in the parish of St James in a community called Irwin, close to the Irwin Primary School.

My school has been closed since March of this year. We have 59 students enrolled and only eight of them getting study material and activities presently.

The students are only receiving activities via WhatsApp because we teachers do not have the resources to facilitate online classes.

The school has four teachers, including the principal who is the trained teacher. I am the only one who is receiving subsidy, which is $19,600. The other two teachers are not getting anything; we work extremely hard and yet we are suffering!

Only God knows how we are surviving.
