What Trump should have said to America

Published:Thursday | January 14, 2021 | 12:07 AM

THE EDITOR, Madam:

THE FOLLOWING, or words akin to it, is what President Donald Trump should have said to America, and to the world, following the deadly, violent and deeply disturbing insurrection upon the US Capitol in Washington, DC, recently:

“My fellow Americans. I deeply regret what took place at the Capitol today, and whatever part my words, and those of my Republican colleagues, may have played in fuelling the regretful, riotous and reprehensible event that took place at the people’s House, on the 6th of January, 2021, I am truly sorry.

“Although tensions have been high, following my defeat to Joe Biden, in the 2020 US presidential election, it is time, now more than ever before, for our country to unite, for us to atone for whatever mistakes we have made along the way, and to heal.

“I, therefore, ask my most ardent, most angry, and most aggrieved supporters to discontinue, discard, and dissociate from any future plans to disrupt, denigrate and do damage to what our nation has traditionally and historically been a beacon, guardian and shining example of, namely, the peaceful transfer of power. We must strive to preserve and protect our beloved Republic, these United States of America, as well as her revered constitution and the democratic ideals she birthed and have stood for since 1776. God bless you, my fellow Americans, and God bless the United States of America.”
