Why can’t women be priests?

Published:Saturday | January 16, 2021 | 7:09 AM

THE EDITOR, Madam:

I agree completely with your editorial ‘Pope Francis Must Go Further’ disagreeing with the Catholic Church for not permitting women to be priests. To support this point, I would like to offer the following argument.

1. The Church teaches that God gave us seven sacraments. Note that the Church teaches that the sacraments are a gift from God, not the Church.

2. Among these sacraments is the Sacrament of Holy Orders, the Priesthood.

4. There is nowhere in the teachings of the Catholic Church that says God gave seven sacraments to men and six sacraments to women.

5. That being the case, what right does the Catholic Church have for withholding one of the sacraments, given by God, from more than half the members of the Church?
