Letter of the Day | Tortured by lewd music and loud bikes

Published:Monday | January 18, 2021 | 12:10 AM

THE EDITOR, Madam:

One wonders if the Noise Abatement Act is still in force, the way these taxi operators are allowed to play the lewdest and ungodly music in the ears of helpless passengers, much to the discomfort and disturbance of one’s spirit. And not to mention the high decibel level at which these taxi operators enjoy themselves, oblivious of their paying passengers.

As if the ugly lyrics alone are not enough, passengers are left to feel the heavy-metal beat deep down into their heart and soul, much to one’s discomfort. And dare anyone open his or her mouth to ask to change the music, or to turn it down. I am left to wonder if there is a law against this music madness!

Another nuisance are the loud bikes. These young people seem to ride without the fear of the law. Sitting inside my office, I am often disturbed by the loud and unwanted revving of these motorbikes. Others find it quite disturbing, too, but are too afraid to talk about it in the public. I am calling on the relevant authorities and the Ministry of National Security to please do something for the sake of our sanity.

We, the decent, law-abiding citizens should not be tortured by wayward motorists, motorcyclists and unscrupulous taxi drivers. It is time the authorities clamped down on this menace.

St Catherine, Kingston and St Andrew are not the only parishes where these nuisances exist, but across the island. Westmoreland leads the pack, according to police reports. It is my deep desire to see the Government use the full force of the law to flatten this curve, and charge people who are in violation of the Noise Abatement Act.

The Government and the law-enforcement agencies should take strict action, but we need to see how soon the Government will turn its attention to address these nuisances. We are waiting for solutions; and till that happens, safe travel.
