Abortion: Isn’t prevention better than cure?

THE EDITOR, Madam:

‘Prevention’ is a word or attitude that is hardly used in our solutions to the many serious issues that we are faced with as individuals, families, society and the Church.

Recently, the topic of abortion has been on the lips of most Jamaicans and is, of course, a controversial one; but I observed that the word ‘prevention’ was omitted from the discussion, especially from the Church as the institution that represents the voice of morality.

The Church that is a part of the life of many, from the cradle to the grave. But do they have programmes that take the family through their different stages of development? For example, preparation for marriage and the reason it should be pursued as the right choice for a stable foundation of the home and society

The teenage years are the most turbulent as it relates to sexuality, especially for the males and their eminent attraction to the opposite sex. Is there any real effort to teach and guide these teenagers for this stage of life, and to avoid the pitfalls of teenage pregnancy.

It is reported that the human brain is not fully developed until the early 20s, yet as a society we have a serious problem with teenage pregnancy, which the Church has done little to curb.

One of our Church leader provided this solution to abortion – that the Church would assist in taking care of the child. Why not go back to address the root cause? Wouldn’t prevention be a better way to avert unwanted pregnancies?
