Sceptical about NIDS safety

Published:Tuesday | February 23, 2021 | 12:13 AM

THE EDITOR, Madam:

The recent security breach of the JAMCOVID website will only further my scepticism of the National Identification System (NIDS). If the Pentagon, which is considered the most secure facility in the world, can be hacked, how can the Government of Jamaica tell us not to worry about our data being hacked. If some banks in Jamaica are having problems with scammers and hackers how can we the people trust them with our NIDS card?

The government of Finland has now put forward legislation that will allow its people to change their personal identity code in cases of major hack that could lead to identity theft. Does the much-talked-about Data Protection Act allow persons to change their national identification number in cases where our data is at risk of being breached or stolen. No amount of public relations will stop a lot of Jamaicans from questioning the NIDS.
