Provide mental health support for educators

Published:Thursday | April 15, 2021 | 12:11 AM

THE EDITOR, Madam:

I am indeed saddened by the recent report of a two-year-old child in Falmouth, Trelawny, who was beaten severely by a caregiver.

I would like to use this medium to empathise with the mother of this child. My heart also goes out to the caregiver. What could have caused such a beating, though? After that question, mental health popped up in my mind. And so, as an early childhood practitioner (ECP), I am suggesting that the Early Childhood Commission provide mental health support for ECPs, specifically to those early-childhood institutions which have been severely affected financially by the pandemic.

Sometimes people are going through mental health breakdowns and are not aware. I am not suggesting that mental health is the cause of such an abuse.

Please provide some professional help in this regard, thank you.

K. W. Jagdath,

Early Childhood Practitioner
