Remembering ProfessorEdwin Jones

THE EDITOR, Madam:

I would like to congratulate Dr Trevor Munroe for this excellent tribute to our late colleague and friend Prof Edwin Samuel Jones in his column in The Sunday Gleaner of April 18. We, among many others, were privileged to be peers of Edwin, whose inspired teaching , research and public service have left a legacy that was unfolding in the very space that we shared in the Faculty of Social Science.

As university director of the then Institute of Social and Economic Research, I never recall an inadequate appreciation to Edwin in his various roles but a especially as dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences. He fully understood the need to sponsor research to validate policymaking and, in particular, to advance the careers of young scholars. Hence the many products that benefited from his intellectual gifts and generosity of spirit populate the public and private services in leadership roles throughout the Caribbean. For this and so many other exemplary characteristics – erudition, compassion, collegiality, and mentorship – his contributions on this earth will remain undiminished.

We hope that his wife Maria and other members of his family will take comfort in joining us, his colleagues of those vibrant times, in remembering him as he was.
