We should not be walking on our flag

THE EDITOR, Madam:

I am a proud Jamaican. Maybe I am the proudest Jamaican as I walk the cities and streets of foreign countries I have had the privilege of visiting. The colours of the Jamaican flag make my heart swell with pride. The black, green and gold is unique among flags of the world. “Mi pride bag swell full”.

I also see similar pride in other people in their country’s flags. And I see their outrage when their flag is desecrated by vandals.

I recently saw a representation of our Jamaican flag being desecrated by being in-laid in coloured brinks along the newly constructed sidewalk in downtown Kingston. My heart was broken. By our own country!

While I’m sure there was no malicious intent on the part of the designers, perhaps a little more consideration of correct protocols for our national symbols should have been exercised. And further, I’m really disappointed in whoever/whichever government agency gave final approval for the design.

As proud Jamaicans, we should not be walking on our flag.

Somebody needs to fix this!
