No functioning X-ray facility in Sp Twn Hospital

THE EDITOR, Madam:

I am appreciative of the work that Dr Christopher Tufton is doing with the upgrading of our health sector, I am shocked and disappointed by this one fact. The Spanish Town Hospital has no functioning X-ray facility!

How can a Type B hospital be without a this important diagnostic tool for so long? How is it practical and cheaper to transport patients Kingston Public Hospital instead of repairing the brokendown machines at Spanish Town?

How is it acceptable to ask inpatients to make their own way to the adjacent shopping centre for X-rays? And why are our hospitals still buying equipment without service contracts in place?

Here we are spending millions procuring expensive equipment which, once they malfunction, end up in the quiet corners of hospitals in disrepair. Is there no responsible person at SERHA who oversees the timely servicing and repair of equipment?

Patients from as far as Clarendon, St Ann and some parts of Kingston come to the Spanish Town Hospital for treatment.

I am appealing to Dr Tufton to urgently intervene in this matter and find solutions.
