Talkback Thursday

Why should we be paying?

Published:Thursday | June 9, 2022 | 12:09 AM

We asked our social media users for responses to the foreign affairs minister’s revelation on Monday that the financing of her campaign for the post of secretary general of the Commonwealth Secretariat was being funded by taxpayers. She said that travel costs are being met through the budget of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and other support is being provided by the Office of the Prime Minister.

“Where does any government of a country get money to fund programmes, fund salaries, build state buildings? It does not come from a pot of gold at the end of the rainbow. It comes from tax dollars paid by taxpayers.”

– @Kanai14

“Why should we be paying to boost the minister’s CV?”

– @Dor8Pickney

“I don’t think we should object, as it is not just a job. Lots of back-door stuff needed to land these positions. Question: Is she a misanthrope? Hope not. Kente cloth might be vain signal.”

– @LambertBrownJa

– @rkphilips

“Having listened to commentaries on KJS’s bid for CSG post, I now understand that she is vying for a job that will redound to her benefit only! Being the CSG is of no more benefit to Jamaica than it is to the other 50+ Commonwealth states! Taxpayers’money should not fund her bid!”

– @MLarristonNow

“Why should we bear the cost for a private post. KMT.”

– @nuttyshe11

“Take the advice you all gave the students the other day.”

– AndreaM88295468

“This is a PRIVATE job, why is the PUBLIC paying for her to look a new work? Make it make sense, please.”

– @keepliving876

“She is Jamaica’s candidate in the race. She is not acting on an individual, personal behalf. She represents Jamaica on behalf of the Jamaican Government. You would have to be very narrow-minded to believe she should use her own resource for this.”
