Congratulating new Anglican Bishop of Kingston

Published:Thursday | June 16, 2022 | 12:12 AM

THE EDITOR, Madam:

It is indeed a source of immense pride for me to congratulate the new Anglican Bishop of Kingston, Rev Father Garth Minott, on his ordination on Saturday, June 11. Bishop Minott hails from Mavis Bank, in the cool hills of the Blue Mountains in east rural St Andrew. As a proud son of Mavis Bank myself, I am particularly proud to offer my congratulations to him.

Indeed, Madam Editor, this little district is renowned for producing outstanding church leaders, beginning with the Rev Monsignor Gladstone Wilson, once regarded as the seventh most-learned man in the world. At the age of 25, on December 24, 1931, Msgr Wilson was ordained with special permission from Pope Pius XI, and as a distinguished graduate, he was offered a lecturing post at the Pontifical Urbana College for the Propagation of the Faith in Rome, which he held for many years.

With Bishop Minott’s appointment, Mavis Bank is now honoured with having three sitting Bishops, two from prominent established churches, and the third a respected Evangelical, all currently serving this blessed land we love in our 60th year of Independence.

As we grapple with the depressing crime and social breakdown in our nation at this time, I invite us to take hope and inspiration from these servants of God, all men of humble beginnings. In that regard, I quote from a hymn by the Rev Charles Wesley:

This, This Is The God We Adore, Our Faithful, Unchangeable Friend;

We’ll Praise Him For All That Is Past, And Trust Him For All That’s To Come.
