Make Ormsby Hall a heritage site

Published:Thursday | July 7, 2022 | 12:06 AM

THE EDITOR, Madam:

The Jamaican Historical Society would like to add its voice to the calls now being made for the rescue and renovation of Ormsby Hall, located at 4 Victoria Ave in downtown Kingston. The building has a long history, having been built in honour of the Rev Stephen Ormsby, rector of the St Michael’s Church in 1907.

Originally located on Tower Street, it was rebuilt after it had been destroyed by earthquake in that same year. The Hall has stood for 90 years providing invaluable service to the community, hosting church events, musical recitals and performances, as well as a myriad of other activities.

It is now badly in need of renovation. We ask that it be considered a heritage site with all that it entails, including its restoration, (and) continue to serve as a place of enjoyment for the community. Buildings such as Ormsby Hall serve as tangible representations of our history and should not be destroyed.
