Rename master’s degree

Published:Friday | September 23, 2022 | 12:06 AM

THE EDITOR, Madam:

I am writing this letter regarding the use of the word “master’s” when making reference to a degree. One of the meaning of the word master is a man who has people working for him, especially servants or slaves.

I have seen in the media where statues that remind us of our colonial past in other countries have been removed and defaced. Since the passing of Queen Elizabeth II, the call has even got louder for ties to be severed from colonialism, for institutions and streets to be renamed. But what about a master’s degree? I believe this could be called a professional degree or another suitable name.

We must look for all traces of colonialism, and when we find them we must not waste time in removing them. This issue is important, and can be solved with a little diligence and effort, but not in one day, but if we start we will get to that day.
