Break down murder data

Published:Wednesday | February 8, 2023 | 1:09 AM

T HE EDITOR, Madam:

The Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF) should break down the data, instead of lumping the categories together when it releases Jamaica’s monthly or annual murder figures. For example, domestic murders, reprisal, accidental, gang-related and random killings should all be placed in separate categories, along with their respective figures.

In so doing, the Government of Jamaica, the JCF, criminologists, John and Jane Public will get a clearer, more accurate picture of what is truly happening in the nation in relation to murders. Persons would be better able to analyse the data, draw sounder conclusions, and be better able to come up with more effective, wide-ranging, relevant solutions.

Only when Jamaica’s high murder rate decreases consistently will foreign investor, returning resident and overseas visitor confidence in Jamaica improve.
