Halloween and Diwali – contrasting celebrations

Published:Friday | November 1, 2024 | 12:05 AM

THE EDITOR, Madam:

On October 31, Halloween was celebrated with children as the main feature of this celebration of horror and evil. The essence of Halloween revolves around themes of darkness, fear, and the supernatural, often highlighting the eerie and macabre aspects of life of which an alcoholic beverage has been named and marketed to blend the respectful Mexican ancestral cultural celebration Day of the Dead ( Día de los Muertos).

In stark contrast, Diwali, the Hindu festival of lights was also celebrated yesterday. Diwali is a celebration of light, hope, and the triumph of good over evil. It is a time when homes are illuminated with oil lamps, candles, and fireworks, symbolizing the victory of light over darkness and knowledge over ignorance.

This juxtaposition of Halloween and Diwali presents a powerful metaphor for the contrasting messages being played out in real life. Halloween’s focus on darkness and fear can be seen as a reflection of the challenges and uncertainties we face, while Diwali’s celebration of light and hope represents the enduring human spirit and our aspiration for a brighter future.

To ensure that our faith and vision for the future are guided by the light of hope, we must embrace the values that Diwali embodies. We must be steadfast in our faith and continue to encourage activities and traditions that foster a sense of hope, positivity, and community. These can include community service, acts of kindness, and celebrations that bring people together.

EDUCATIONAL TOOLS

It is necessary to use the contrasting themes of Halloween and Diwali as educational tools to inspire discussions about the importance of light, knowledge, and goodness in our lives. Highlight stories and examples of individuals and communities overcoming darkness and adversity.

This allows our individual voices to be heard that will lead to establish new traditions that emphasise the importance of light, hope, and unity. This can include lighting candles or lamps, sharing positive stories, and engaging in activities that promote well-being and togetherness. Let us use the time around these celebrations to reflect on personal and collective goals. Renew commitments to positive actions and attitudes that contribute to a brighter future for all.

By examining the significance of each day celebrated, we can draw valuable lessons and insights that help us navigate the complexities of life. Let us ensure that the light of hope and faith shines brightly for generations to come, guiding us towards a future filled with positivity and unity.
