Letter of the Day | Is there a link between mental illness and crime?

THE EDITOR, Madam:

Is there a link between mental illness and crime and violence? It’s something we need to think about, especially with the recent rise in violence and crime. It seems clear that trauma leads to more trauma, and that impacts both adults and teens.

It might sound a bit odd, but asking this question could help us find new ways to tackle crime. When we consider the terrible things happening, it’s hard to believe that someone with a clear mind would commit such acts. That’s why we should start addressing the mental health struggles in our society – things like stress, depression, anxiety, post-traumatic stress disorder, and the daily traumas that affect us all.

This can be tackled in some ways.

1. Education: Jamaica has made some progress in dealing with mental health, but there’s a lot more to do to raise awareness. We all need to recognise that we’re in this together.

2. Policy development: We need solid policies to handle mental health crises and figure out how to address them effectively. Early detection and treatment of mental health issues are crucial.

3. Access to psychiatric treatment: People need affordable mental health care. A lot of folks just can’t afford help, so they suffer in silence, which isn’t good for anyone.

4. Mental health hotline: Sometimes, people just want someone to talk to when they feel down. A simple phone call can be a lifesaver. Setting up a free mental health hotline that anyone can reach out to would make a huge difference.

Crime has long plagued the country. Let us address the root cause through the renewal of our minds. By addressing the different aspects of mental illness and offering support, we can create a more inclusive culture. Many individuals suffer quietly and hesitate to seek help because they fear being judged. We must remember that it’s okay not to be okay; asking for help is a sign of strength.
