Let human rights be ‘a lived reality for everyone’
THE EDITOR, Madam:
On International Human Rights Day (recognised this year on December 10), we join hands to celebrate the fundamental principles that uphold the dignity and rights of every individual. In Jamaica, as we reflect on our commitment to human rights, let us renew our dedication to fostering a society that respects and protects the rights of all its members.
This year’s theme, ‘Freedom, Equality and Justice for All’, calls for government, public and private institution and agencies to set up a system of accountability and good governance to ensure and protect the human rights of citizens of Jamaica.
As a nation, we affirm our commitment to championing these ideals, ensuring that every citizen has the opportunity to live a life of dignity, free from discrimination, and with access to justice and equality.
While we celebrate Human Rights Day, the people in Palestine, Ukraine, Haiti and many other countries are not able to celebrate due to the fact of ongoing war and internal conflicts. Children are being murdered, females abused, and last but not least, many countries are not living up to their responsibility to accommodate refugee and provide them with access to legal representation. Jamaica could consider a more friendly approach to Haiti migrants.
Let us take a moment to recognise the progress we have made while acknowledging the challenges that lie ahead. By working together, we can create an environment where human rights are not just a concept, but a lived reality for everyone. Empowering individuals, fostering inclusion, and promoting understanding are essential steps on our journey towards a more just and humane society.
As we celebrate International Human Rights Day, let us reflect on the role each of us plays in building a better future. By embracing diversity, promoting dialogue, and standing up against injustice, we contribute to the collective effort of creating a world where human rights are upheld for all. Many matters need to be addressed and SUFJ is determined to advocate, work and network with all those sharing the same vision.
May this day serve as a reminder of our shared responsibility to protect and promote the inherent rights and freedoms of every person in Jamaica and beyond.
In solidarity,
MARIA CARLA GULLOTTA
