Style Week Jamaica hosted the third-annual, Careers in International Fashion symposium, which saw close to 400 students from high schools and post-secondary institutions from across the island gathered at the Courtleigh Auditorium to hear presentations from bankers, heads of international fashion programmes, and Government ministers.

The event, conceptualised by SAINT International CEO Deiwght Peters, exposed students to fashion careers that are often overlooked, but integral to the industry. These include styling; accounting; model booking and management; retail buying; merchandising; branding; campaign development; marketing; public relations; and fashion journalism.

Minister of Science, Energy and Technology, The Honourable Fayval Williams; State Minister in the Ministry of Education, Youth and Information The Hon Alando Terrelonge; JN Bank Sales Development Specialist Michael Andre Collins; and fashion designer Courtney Washington, were the local presenters for the event that was moderated by cultural consultant, Sydney Bartley. The Q&A sessions were moderated by financier and Style Week Fashion Ambassador, Mark McIntosh.

The overseas guests who flew in for the event were — director of the Fashion Institute of South Florida, Rucht D’Oleo; chair of the Miami Fashion Institute Asanyah Davidson (who is fun fact: Jamaican-born); and dean of the Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT) School of Art and Design, Troy Richards.

By the end of the event, the students clamoured to speak with each presenter to discuss ways to improve and further their fashion educations and their future careers.
