It's the first Monday of May and there are so many M words that immediately come to mind: memorable, monumental, milestone, majestic and magical. All are uniquely associated with an iconic event that bears the same significant starting letter: Met Gala.

Pop stars, rock stars, rappers, singers, actors, producers, even track stars make the red carpet their runway, strutting in super stunning, jaw dropping and awe-inspiring fashion for the flashing paparazzi.

We have all marvelled when industry powerhouses like Rihanna and Beyoncé graced the steps. Rihanna has given us biblical fashion in 2018 with an extravagant Maison Margiela to accompany the theme, 'Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination'. In all of her radiance, the Diamond singer was adorned in an elegant Guo Pei omelette dress designed by John Galliano for 'China: Through the Looking Glass' theme in 2015. In 2017, the beauty mogul took the avant-garde to the spotlight in a Rei Kawakubo design to elevate the theme, ‘Rei Kawakubo/Comme des Garçons: Art of the In-Between'.

The Bey-hive could not get enough of their queen bee’s Givenchy Haute Couture Met Gala looks over the years. Her exquisite sheer dress to accentuate the theme 'China Through the Looking Glass' continues to be her most show-stopping look to date. But she initiated the sheer game back in 2012 with black and hints of feathered blue to the end of the dress for the theme, ‘Schiaparelli and Prada: Impossible Conversations'. The theme ‘Punk: Chaos and Couture’ saw Beyoncé setting the red carpet on fire in a strapless dress with fiery accents. And in 2011, she stepped out in a regal Emilio Pucci dress in honour of the ‘Alexander McQueen: Savage Beauty’ theme.

And of course, there’s the effervescent Kim Kardashian, the only celebrity to ever master the art of ‘dripping in finesse’ in a Thierry Mugler original for the 2019 theme, ‘Camp: Notes of Fashion'. She was a golden goddess in Versace for the 2018 ‘Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination’ theme, sparkled in 2015 in Roberto Cavalli for ‘China: Through the Looking Glass’ and opted for a breathtaking silver Balmain design for the ‘Manus x Machina: Fashion in an Age of Technology’ theme in 2016.

Last year, fashionista Jennifer ‘JLo’ Lopez added a hint of cowboy to her feather Ralph Lauren dress for the theme: 'In America: A Lexicon of Fashion'. Fashion model Iman combined the creative forces of designers Dolce and Gabbana and Harris Reed for her magnificent look. And sisters Chloe and Halle Bailey rocked Rodarte for their stylish entrance. How can we forget track star Sha'Carri Richardson’s red carpet debut featuring Theophilio by Jamaica-born designer Edvin Thompson? Certainly a win for the black, green and gold.

The Met Gala returns to the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City, and is set to wow viewers this evening under the theme ‘Gilded Glamour’ or In America: An Anthology of Fashion. Tune in to Gleaner Lifestyle to see some of your favourite fashion moments.
