Writing stories about love and lust is second nature to K, Sean Harris, but he never suspected that Kiss of Death, one of the books the author published in 2010, would have reawakened a new sense of romance and unlocked a connection with a reader by the name of Sydeney Hewitt, whom he now calls his wife.

It’s another love story which begins with the exchange of positive messages. Sydeney reached out to K. Sean via social media to let him know how much she enjoyed the book. After several messages, she extended an invitation to her birthday party to the author. “The rest was history. I don’t know if it’s unique in a general sense, but it certainly is unique for us in that it’s organic, pure, and how far we have sailed is unbelievable,” he told Island Wedding.

Sydeney said that their first date was unconventional — with loud music and a lot of people talking and laughing, as well as lots of dancing — but for her, it felt as though they were the only persons in the space.

“It was if we were in our own little bubble enjoying each other’s company,” she said.

K. Sean had always envisioned a woman who exudes femininity, sensuality and is family-oriented to become the one he would marry, and Sydeney embodied the qualities which made him value the time spent with her. “She definitely had to be feminine and family-oriented; there are other things, but those two were the most important. There wasn’t one moment where she sealed the deal. There were several of them that kept showing and reassuring me that she was the one,” he said.

“He has impressed on me many valuable morals, but one that stood out the most that has made me a stronger woman is a saying he always says, ‘You can’t control people’s action, but you can control your emotions and reaction’, and that has helped me to remain in my feminine frame even in the most arduous situation,” Sydeney said.

PROPOSAL FOR THE BOOKS

The author would oftentimes allow Sydeney to read the inner literary workings of his mind, and one night, while at home, he casually handed his laptop to her and told her to look at what he had written. It turned out to be a proposal for the books — one disguised as a poem which concluded with K. Sean popping the question. When she turned to look at him, he was on one knee with a ring, she said.

“I actually didn’t know the day I was going to propose until the day. I wanted it to be organic, but romantic and surprising. I accomplished that,” he said confidently.

Instead of planning an extravagant ceremony with a full bridal party and a large guest list, the couple chose a non-traditional wedding surrounded by their village. It was all organised within a few months of the wedding date. The two would spend every moment together leading up to their wedding day on December 18, when they set sail from Port Royal to Maiden Cay. Their union was witnessed by their immediate families, including their mothers and two-year-old son Dru.

“Our wedding day was fun, filled with nervous excitement and joy that it had arrived. I had an early start, from about 11 a.m.; and when I was completely ready, make-up and hair done, that’s when it started to ‘marinate’ that I’m a bride, soon to be Mrs Harris. I got dressed on the yacht, and my mother-in-law helped me put on my dress while everyone was on deck waiting. The look on his face when he saw me was priceless. I struggled not to cry and ruin my make-up. It was the best day ever,” Sydeney shared.

The sounds of Here and Now by Luther Vandross signalled to K. Sean that he was finally getting married to the mother of his child and the woman he knows he is “spending the rest of my life with”. The couple explained that the ceremony was short and intense, but also had its funny moments.

K. Sean joked that it was the day of the World Cup finals and everything went well because “it was a sunny and beautiful day, most of my loved ones were present, and [Lionel] Messi’s win with Argentina was manifested. It’s tough to pick a favourite part, but when the pastor declared us husband and wife and our loved ones were cheering, that was an indescribable feeling,” he said.

“Sydeney has strongly reinforced something that I always knew — the power of manifestation. At the start of 2022, she literally wrote in her journal, ‘Get married on December 18.’ And she, well, we did. When you truly want something, and your desire aligns with your actions, the universe responds positively, you will get it,” K. Sean shared of the greatest lesson from his wife which has strengthened his pursuit of his goals.

“I would say I have added value to his life in different ways, but the main one is being his ‘peace’. I know how cliché it sounds, but I am that; that is me. I’m his peace. In this world filled with chaos, one may crave peace and I’m able to give him that,” she asserted.

The last of six children — with four sisters and one brother — Sydeney has strong family values, like K. Sean, and the meaning of their marriage is centred on “being one in the eyes of man and God, and raising their child in a loving and stable home”. Although the excitement from the wedding overshadowed their first Christmas holiday as husband and wife, it was still an extra special occasion for the Christmas-loving couple, who for the first time now received gift cards addressed to Mr and Mrs Harris.

With over 40 books under his belt, K Sean has embarked on a new literary journey with Sydeney to write their story. “We are just enjoying our lives together as husband and wife and all that comes with that, and raising our child. The importance we place on being great parents to our son. The way we care for him also strengthens our bond,” K Sean shared.

Sydeney added, “I’m basking in the fact that we are married, and being addressed now as Mrs Harris.”
