Air quality data from Riverton fire to be known today
The health ministry is expected today to have the results of air quality data from the fire which has been raging at the Riverton City Landfill in St Andrew since Wednesday.
NSWMA yesterday estimated that as much as half of the 120 acre is on fire.
Smoke from the dump has blanketed sections of Kingston, St Andrew and Portmore in St Catherine.
There are also reports that sections of St Thomas and Clarendon are also being affected by the smoke.
Acting Director, Emergency, Disaster Preparedness and Special Services at the Ministry of Health, Dr Sonia Copeland, has made a special appeal to the public to take precautionary measures to protect themselves from the smoke nuisance.
Copeland says the opening hours for some health centres in the Corporate Area will be extended today and tomorrow to facilitate persons who may need medical attention.
The authorities have not given a timeline for putting out the fire.
