St Catherine garage operators see increase in vehicle woes

SPANISH TOWN, St Catherine:
For the last two weeks, a number of garages in St Catherine have been repairing a number of motor vehicles with fuel pump and injector problems.
According to garage owners, the contributing factor has to do with the use of bad gas by motor vehicle owners.
Jason Anderson, manager of LJ Automative garage in Portmore, told The Gleaner that his garage has been busy for the last two weeks replacing damage fuel pumps and injectors.
"Since the problem with the bad gas surfaced, we have been repairing four to five cars per day, on average," Anderson told The Gleaner.
"The problem is more pronounced with the gas-directed injection vehicles where, in most cases, we have to change the injectors and gas pumps for the vehicles to function normally again," he further explained.
According to Anderson, these repairs are costly to the motor vehicle owners, who sometimes have to expend up to a $100,000 to effect repairs.
He suggested that gas contamination is more common with the 87 gas which, he said, has a higher sulphur level that clogs the injectors and damage the gas pump.
"I would like to warn motor vehicle owners to carefully select the gas stations to purchase their gas, in order to minimise the problem of bad gas," Anderson cautioned.
Meanwhile, the owner of a 1998 Mitsubishi Challenger, Tyrone Williams of Spanish Town, said he had to spend $180,000 to replace injectors, throttle body and fuel system because of the bad gas he purchased at a gas station in Portmore.
"The Government must insist that the culprit gas stations, when they determine who they are, pay for the repairs that motorists have to undertake," Williams said.
