Marion Patterson walks with God

PORT ANTONIO, Portland:

Growing up in a Christian home, where both parents were deeply rooted in their faith allowed Marion Patterson to easily accept Jesus Christ as her personal Saviour.

Patterson, now 25 years old, is a graduate of Northern Caribbean University (NCU), having secured a bachelor of science degree in social work, a career that she has yet to pursue.

"I thank God for whatever I have accomplished so far," she told Family and Religion.

"A lot of money went into my education in ensuring that my goals were achieved. There were days when I just didn't know where the money was coming from, as my dad and mom were not financially able. But their commitment to God saved the day. My father, Mordecai, and mother, Thelma, worked tirelessly to ensure that I completed my study at university," she added.

And although Marion is yet to assume a career in her field, she is currently employed at Bay View Villa and Spa in Portland, where she works as an administrator. Her interaction with other employees and guests, though testing at times, does not distract or prevent her from sharing her Christian and religious beliefs with those willing to listen.

But unlike her sister, Jodi, who is two years her senior, Marion, said there are times when she becomes spiritually weak, especially among friends, who do not share her belief, and have even scoffed at her behaviour, which they claim is "too righteous".

Continuing Patterson said: "Jodi and I both attended NCU, but she is now happily married. I, too, want to follow in my sisters footsteps of getting married. Sometimes it's a bit hard being a young Seventh-day Adventist Christian, especially when one is not yet married. I am, however, happy for the Christian education that I have received, which makes me strong - even when the chips are down. One thing I always dwell on is that when I am down to nothing, God is up to something."
