We are not 'dumping' cases in the high court, says DPP

Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) Paula Llewellyn has sought to defend her office against criticism that it has been "dumping" cases on the Home Circuit Court which are not ready to go to trial.

High Court judge Lloyd Hibbert made the assertion on Monday after a prosecutor admitted that the Office of the DPP was not ready to prosecute a particular murder case because the witness was unavailable.

However, the DPP says the judge's criticism was an unfair characterisation of the work that her office has been doing.

Llewellyn says based on the available resources, her office has been doing a decent job at getting cases ready for trial.

The DPP also said her office has prepared some 80 cases which could not be heard because of an overburdened court system.
