Nearly 1,300 sportsmen and women have signed up for the Jamaican Athletes Insurance Plan.
The Ministry of Sports is spearheading the implementation of the plan, which began in February and is expected to cost close to J$60 million annually.
The sports ministry says the athletes who have already registered are drawn from 28 of the over 40 sporting associations comprising junior and senior athletes who have represented Jamaica at international competitions.
The plan provides group health, life and personal accident coverage for beneficiaries, ages seven to 75.
Sports Minister Olivia Grange says it will ensure that the nation’s athletes can enjoy a career without having to worry about the financial burden caused by injuries.
