$28 million to repair Breast Works to Windsor main road in Portland

Work is now underway to repair a massive breakaway along the Breast Works to Windsor main road in Portland.

The roadway located at West Retreat in the parish failed during heavy rains in December 2015 and has been reduced to single lane traffic.

Communication Manager at the National Works Agency, Stephen Shaw, says approval was granted for the project to be undertaken last August, however some delays were experienced as some of the material required to reconstruct the wall had to be sourced overseas.

Shaw says the construction phase of the project got underway last month and should be completed by the end of May.

Under the project, which is being funded by the Road Maintenance Fund at a cost of over $28 million, a gabion retaining wall will be constructed and the roadway reinstated.

The road is an important access to several communities, including the Rio Grande Valley, and the main access to the starting point of popular tourist attraction, Rafting on the Rio Grande.

The NWA is asking motorists to exercise extreme caution while the work is underway and to obey the instructions of flag persons and posted warning signs.
