Cabinet to approve MOU with Israeli firm to create region's first Cyber Academy

Cabinet will next week be asked to approve a Memorandum of Understanding between the Government of Jamaica and Israel Aerospace Industries, concerning the creation of the Caribbean’s first ever Cyber Academy.

The academy is intended to build a professional and skilled cyber workforce through the provision of training, practical experience and certification in the areas of cyber security, cyber defense and cyber intelligence.

Minister of Science, Energy and Technology Dr Andrew Wheatley says the academy will be a centre of excellence in the Caribbean and establish Jamaica as the regional leader in cyber security and defense.

Wheatley says among the major challenges being faced in both the public and private sectors in the fight against rampant cybercrime is the inability to find and retain expertise in the field.

He says Jamaica must respond to the drain of talent by training even more experts to equip the country with the tools needed to deal with cyber threats and establish a truly digital society.

He notes that cyber crimes have been increasing at an exponential rate globally, with the nefarious activity costing.
