Attorney to ask court to release Tommy Lee from police custody

The attorney for popular entertainer Tommy Lee says he is giving the police until 2 o'clock this afternoon to charge his client with an offence or release him.

"Failing that, I'm going to go to court and make a habeas corpus application for his release," Tommy Lee's attorney Ernest Smith told The Gleaner.

The entertainer, whose real name is Leroy Burrell, was taken into custody early Sunday morning in Manor Park, St Andrew shortly after leaving the set of the popular talent show Magnum Kings and Queens of Dancehall.

According to Smith, shortly after exiting an ATM, Tommy Lee was arrested by police personnel who were wearing masks.

Police investigators say they want to question the entertainer in relation to organised crime in Montego Bay, St James.

That assertion, however, has left Smith fuming.

"This is the fifth time in the last 12 months the police have said he is wanted for questioning in relation to organised crime in Montego Bay. On the past four occasion he was released without charge," Smith said.

He said the entertainer no longer resides in St James.

Part of the reason for that, he said, was that the police are refusing to give permits for shows on which Tommy Lee is booked to appear.
