Accountant General's Department to be relocated over air quality issues

The Accountant General’s Department is to be relocated amid concern about the air quality at the current location in downtown Kingston. 

The Cabinet yesterday approved the relocation following a submission by the Finance Minister Dr Nigel Clarke.

Last Friday, Clarke met with restive staff members at the department who expressed frustration about their work environment.

Clarke sought to assure the staff that the Government intended to move speedily to identify a suitable location to temporarily house the offices of the Accountant Generals’ Department.

The Finance Minister also indicated that further rehabilitation work and tests would be done at the existing location by suitably qualified independent third parties, at which time a final determination will be made on the occupying the building.

The Accountant General's Department occupies a section of the renovated old Oceana hotel which once housed the Health Ministry.

The Government had spent some $400 million to renovate the area occupied by employees of the department.

At the time it housed the Health Ministry, there were also complaints about air quality.
