Minister of National Security Dr Horace Chang says music, sports, and technology (MST) will be one of the ministry's new strategies in helping to prevent crime among youths in vulnerable communities.

Chang announced the plan during his presentation in the 2018/19 Sectoral Debate in the House of Representatives yesterday.

“I believe it’s safe to say that every Jamaican male loves music and sports and is fascinated with technology. MST activities will reduce delinquency and promote contact with positive role models, such as coaches and musicians with whom they interact and learn,” said Chang.

He added that in consultation with the Planning Institute of Jamaica MST strategies will be implemented in 20 of the most volatile communities, starting with St James.

According to Chang, he is confident that a focus on MST will help in treating many of the social ills within these areas, much like the Ministry of Education, Youth and Information's HEART and HOPE programmes.

“The intention is to stimulate pro-social values, attitudes, and behaviour among our unattached youth. This approach will re-socialise antisocial mindsets and promote respect for self, others, and community,” added Chang.
