Mayor of Kingston Senator Delroy Williams says the Kingston and St Andrew Municipal Corporation is reviewing options for securing markets and making them more fire resistant.

Williams says the perennial problem has become a burden on the public purse.

He was speaking against the background that municipal corporation is well advanced in the repairs to the Redemption Arcade in downtown, Kingston and expects it to reopen next month.

The arcade was destroyed by fire last June.

Since then, the corporation has since restored 62 stalls in the arcade with further repairs being done to beautify and improve the space.

"We are currently designing a seated recreational area, fitting rooms, and landscaping for the arcade. The space was slightly clustered which led to concerns about safety, security and the management of the space. We have been setback by other market fires across the city but we are targeting July for the reopening of the market," Williams explained.

He added that the municipal corporation currently has projects ongoing at the Jubilee Arcade and the Red Rose Fish Market with the Papine Market also on the radar for repairs following a fire earlier this month.

The Kingston mayor says steps will be taken to improve the markets for both the vendors and the shoppers.
