World Cup: Germany in the nick of time

Germany revived their hopes of becoming the nation to win back-to-back World Cup titles since Brazil in 1962 with a goal in the last minute of time added on that sealed a 2-1 win over Sweden.

Toni Kroos scored the all-important goal moments before the final whistle.

The result means all four teams in Group F can still qualify for the round of 16. That will be decided next Wednesday when Mexico face Sweden in Ekaterinburg and Germany play South Korea in Kazan.

Things started badly for the defending champions as Ola Toivonen's deft first-half lob had left them facing elimination.

But Marco Reus, who started in place of Arsenal's Mesut Ozil, prodded in an equaliser in the second half as Germany assumed control after the break.

Germany then had Jerome Boateng sent off late for a second yellow card, but continued to chase the game knowing a draw would leave their fate in the hands of another team.

They were rewarded in the final minute of added time when Kroos swept a free-kick into the top right corner from the left of the penalty area.
