$50M islandwide clean-up programme

A major clean-up project is slated to be undertaken by the Government as part of efforts to minimise the effects of flooding during periods of heavy rainfall.
Speaking at a post-Cabinet press briefing at Jamaica House yesterday, Minister of Local Government and Community Development Desmond McKenzie said the Government has budgeted $50 million for the islandwide programme.
McKenzie said that additional information on the exercise will be provided soon.
In the meantime, he said the Government will be spending approximately $35 million in Douglas Castle, St Ann to undertake significant road-improvement works.
The money will be spent on raising a section of the Douglas Castle road by approximately 15 metres and the construction of box culverts.
“The community has been severely affected due to recent flooding,” McKenzie disclosed.
Residents of the rural community, which is located near the St Ann/Clarendon border, were impacted by extensive flooding in 2017.
They lost livestock, crops and household items as a result of the heavy rains.
